Two kinds of textual evidence offer more than fair certainty that Apess himself wrote the books published under his name. None of them is prefaced, or authorized, by anyone else, unlike such nearly mandatory testimonials by whites in books by African Americans and by other Native Americans later. Such flourishes were commonplace in books by Indians edited by, or actually written by, whites. Each book by Apess appears as though no one would, or should, find it remarkable that an "Indian" could write a book, especially one that purported to be his autobiography.

Page 3 A Son of the Forest Preface In offering to the public a second edition of this work, the Author cannot but testify his gratitude for the liberal patronage bestowed upon the first editionnotwithstanding the many disadvantages under which it appeared. The present edition is greatly improved, as well in the printing as in the arrangement of the work and the style in which it is written. The first edition was hurried through the press, in consequence of which many inaccuracies occurred. It has been carefully revised; those parts which some persons deemed objectionable have been stricken out;1 and in its improved form it is now submitted to the public, with the earnest prayer of the author that it may be rendered a lasting blessing to everyone who may give it even a cursory perusal.

He accordingly went to a Mr. Furman, the person who had occasionally furnished us with milk, and the good man came immediately to see me. He found me dreadfully beaten, and the other children in a state of absolute suffering; and as he was extremely anxious that something should be done for our relief, he applied to the selectmen of the town in our behalf, who after duly considering the application adjudged that we should be severally taken and bound out. Being entirely disabled in consequence of the wounds I had received, I was supported at the expense of the town for about twelve months.
