Sometimes it is, of course, and then we are using 'like' and 'love' as synonyms. Quite commonly, we are not; and then we are distinguishing, on the one hand, between liking in the sense of enjoying, wanting, preferring, or choosing, and 23 on the other hand, cherishing or loving. When we do so, what we love is something that we value for itself even though we may believe some aspects of the object to be worthless.
Something of this interest in continued care can be seen in those advertisements that offer objects for sale 'only to a good home where they will be cared for properly'. Thus private ownership of an object does not exclude loving it for its own sake. In fact, love of an object is a common reason for later wishing to own it and thus ensuring its presence. If we did not first love objects love them independently of our self-love - they could not later directly contribute to our self- love as they sometimes do.
